In Japanese, makko means incense powder. In this case, we are talking about a specific one called tabu: it is the finely ground bark of the Machilus Thunbergii tree that grows in many Asian countries like Japan, Taiwan, Thailand or the south of China. Due to its many properties, it has been used as a base to make Japanese incense for centuries:
- When mixed with water, the tabu powder acquires a plasticine like consistency. Sticks, cones or spirals are then easily shaped.
- As it is almost odourless, other scents can be added to the tabu mixture without altering them: ground ingredients like clove, cinnamon, sandalwood or agarwood as well as perfumery essential oils.
- It burns in a smooth and uniform way.
