Kokeshi Doll - Nadeshiko

Nadeshiko refers to a small pink carnation with frilled petals, native to Japan. Literally meaning “cherished child” or “beloved girl”, it evokes the ideal of the traditional Japanese woman.

Kokeshi, a Charming Japanese Tradition
Beautiful, charming, and full of meaning, kokeshi dolls are much more than decorative objects. In Japan, they have traditionally been regarded as symbols of good luck and protectors of the home.

Their origins date back more than two centuries to the Tohoku region in northern Japan. Skilled woodturning artisans first created them as toys for their children and as souvenirs for visitors to local hot springs. Crafted on a lathe, they are known for their simple yet elegant shape: a round head set on top of a cylindrical body.

To make them, artisans carefully select wood that has been dried for several years to help prevent cracking. Cherry wood is often used for the face because of its smooth texture and pale tone, while other woods, such as dogwood, maple, chestnut, and zelkova, are chosen for the body. Once carved, the dolls are hand-painted with floral motifs and finished with a delicate layer of wax or lacquer.

Today, kokeshi dolls continue to symbolize simplicity, protection, and a strong connection to Japanese artisanal traditions. In many homes, they are treasured and sometimes passed down from one generation to the next.
