Gongs of various types have played an important role in both religious and secular life in many Asian cultures. They have been the revered instruments of warriors, emperors, princes and priests. Gongs are essential in Buddhist temples: they are sounded at the beginning and the end of the day. They are struck by Chinese people 108 times to get rid of 108 types of worries, as "upon hearing the gong, worries will cease, wisdom will grow". Gongs can also be sounded to chase away evil spirits, warn of danger, heal the sick and invoke the spirits of the dead.
