Hyoshigi – Traditional Japanese percussion instrument
The hyoshigi is a Japanese percussion instrument dating back to medieval times. It is used to start and mark the rhythm in various performances such as Kabuki theatre, Kamishibai (paper theatre) and sumo wrestling. Its sharp, bright and penetrating sound serves to capture the public’s attention, announce the start of a performance or the change of a scene and, in the old days, to warn in case of fire or to accompany security patrols.
