Symbolism of the rose: love and spirituality

The red rose is of course associated with passionate love. Its flamboyant colour, the softness of its petals and its elegant appearance awaken the strongest feelings. In popular culture roses are also associated with friendship, happiness and gratitude.
In spiritual terms, the rose is the Eastern equivalent of the lotus, associated with enlightenment and perfection. This is particularly true of the medieval myth of Saint George, in which the valiant knight succeeded in slaying a dragon that was devouring a young princess, the symbol of the soul, every year. From the beast's blood sprang a rosebush with red flowers, an allegory of the transformation of the unconscious represented by the dragon into beauty and mystery. In Catalonia, it is still traditional to give a red rose every 23 April to celebrate the patron saint, Saint George.
