Tuned to the last notes of Beethoven's worldknown 9th symphony, this chime is a classic. The symphony was performed for the first time in Viena in 1824 and it was a great success. It is told that at the end of the concert, Beethoven who was deaf remained absorbed in his thougths without hearing the people clapping; finally one of the soloist touched his arm and the German composer could see the hands and handkerchiefs moving to applaud him. This was the last appearence of the genious who died 3 years later.
For the fourth movement, Beethoven used part of Friedrich Schiller's poem Ode to Joy:
Be embraced, you millions!
This kiss is for the whole world!
Brothers, above the canopy of stars
Must dwell a loving father.
Do you bow down before Him, you millions?
Do you sense your Creator, o world?
Seek Him above the canopy of stars!
He must dwell beyond the stars.

In 1985, Ode To Joy was adopted as the official European Anthem.
