For the Japanese, both Daruma and Mount Fuji are spiritual symbols, one Buddhist and the other Shintoism. This figurine pays homage to both. It is decorated with red maple leaves carried by the wind, the contemplation of which is experienced in Japan as a ritual, a moment of tranquillity and an excuse to go out and commune with nature.
The black Daruma is used to protect and prevent bad things from happening. It is also used to success in business. His eyebrows are shaped like cranes and his beard resembles the scales on a turtle's shell, animals that symbolize longevity in Japan.
Daruma, what is it?
Daruma, also called the Doll of Goals, is a Japanese good luck amulet. Handmade with papier-mâché, it is a representation of the monk Bodhidharma, the founder of zen Buddhism. According to the legend, he was enlightened after meditating alone for 9 years in a cave, but his arms and legs eventually became atrophied and fell off. Hence its round shape. The spirit of daruma
The Daruma doll reminds us that with determination and perseverance, we will achieve the purpose we chose. In this regard, it is essential that we choose a specific and achievable goal. It is not a matter of buying a Daruma doll and wait for our wish to get fulfilled as if by magic: Daruma motivates us and gives us strength to work hard and do our best to be successful. Any occasion is good for the Japanese to make a gift of a doll, although there are some significant dates such as birthdays or the New Year.

How to use a Daruma
How to use a Daruma
The Daruma is not merely an object; it is a promise to oneself.
It is a ritual, a symbol of intent and
First, the left eye of the Daruma is painted while establishing a clear goal. This gesture serves as a declaration of intent, a silent commitment.
It is placed in a visible location—on a desk if the goal is professional, in the kitchen if healthier habits or similar objectives are desired: its presence thus becomes a constant reminder.
The second eye is painted only when that goal is achieved. Thus, the Daruma becomes a tangible symbol of accomplishment, perseverance, and gratitude.
And what happens if the goal is not achieved? It simply means that one must seek different ways to accomplish one's objectives.
A THOUSAND-YEAR LEGACY
Inspired by Bodhidharma, a 6th-century Buddhist master and founder of the Zen school, the Daruma represents perseverance in the face of adversity.
Legend has it that Bodhidharma meditated for nine years inside a cave without moving—losing his limbs in the process—his determination making him a symbol of inner strength. His image was depicted by the swordsman and artist Miyamoto Musashi and has been revered ever since as an emblem of willpower, focus, and discipline.
The creation of Daruma dolls is a deeply rooted artisanal tradition in Japan, especially in the city of Takasaki in Gunma Prefecture.
The process begins with creating the base structure using papier-mâché, known as “washi,” which is molded and dried to form the Daruma’s characteristic rounded shape. Once the structure is formed, a layer of intense red paint is applied—a color traditionally associated with good luck and protection in Japanese culture.
Afterwards, artisans hand-paint the facial details, including the eyebrows and beard representing Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism.
