Kohgou (香合)

Kohgou is a small, two-piece porcelain container designed to hold a piece of the sacred Hinoki (Japanese cypress) wood plate.

When you open the lid, you will see the removable Hinoki wood inside.

This Japanese sacred wood has been used since ancient times to build symbolic structures and traditional arts and crafts.

How to use the diffuser?

To enjoy it, simply apply a few drops of Elemense diffuser oil (sold separately) to the Hinoki wood and let the gentle aroma spread.

Leave the wood inside the Kohgou plate without the lid on to enjoy the scent, once finished, you can put the lid back on.

The lid also makes this container ideal for travel.

It is recommended to use different plates for different oils to maintain the maximum effect of the fragrance.

About the diffuser

The Kohgou takes on a style originating from Nagasaki, Japan, where artisans have perfected combining tradition and modern design.

Kohgou can also be used as a container to hold small accessories or used as an incense plate with an incense holder.

The ancient art of incense

Fragrances that harmonize space and spirit

Aromas influence our mood. The four kanji characters representing each of the
five fragrances are verses from the poem “The Ten Virtues of Incense,”
introduced in Japan over 600 years ago. It remains as relevant today as it was
then.

suou

蘇枋 “Wood”

塵裡偸閑

Cultivate love for others through the appreciation of plants and flowers.

kiyobi

浄火 “Fire”

清浄心身

Purify body and mind and free yourself from negative thoughts.

nukubai

温灰 “Earth”

静中成友

Comfort your spirit with the warmth of home.

sekishin

石心 “Metal”

久蔵不朽

A heart with the will of a rock that remains unchanging.

tetsukon

鉄紺 “Water”

感格鬼神

Flow like pure spring water and a determination as strong as iron.

Tranquillity and peace in everyday life

The fragrance softly permeates the air

“Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water,” the five elements that compose the world, are also the essence of elemense.

The ancient Chinese philosophy of the “Five Elements Theory” asserts that everything in the universe is created from these five main elements. It also states that they flow, interact, and influence one another.

We have developed the elemense fragrances based on this philosophy. Each has been consciously crafted to emit complex aromatic layers that unfold gradually— from top notes to base notes, one after the other. They are carefully designed so that your space becomes filled with peace and allows your mind to relax.

The fragrance quietly infuses the air.

Watch the ash fall. Let the oil slowly seep in.
Surrender to the passing of time.

Take delight as the fragrance gently envelops you,
Leaving an imprint in your memory.

Focus on the invisible fragrance.
Allow the complex world of fragrance to guide your senses.
Let it trigger a forgotten story from your past.

The tools are not just for function.
Their free and exquisite forms
Their free and exquisite forms
Play a part in the sublime experience.

Harmony between space, mind and aroma

The essence of contemporary wellbeing

The brand was launched in the United States in 2018 and arrived in Japan in 2021. Based on the long perfumery heritage of Nippon Kodo, spanning 440 years, elemense offers a new way to enjoy fragrances that fits with our way of life today.

The origins of Nippon Kodo date back to the 16th century, when the master perfumer Koju became incense supplier to the Emperor of Japan. His mastery in perfumery has been preserved for 440 years. Incense is embedded in our daily lives. At Nippon Kodo, we source the best raw materials from around the world. Then, using our unique perfumery techniques, we create exceptional fragrances for you.

Takuhiro Shinomoto, creative director of elemense, is creative director and owner of Tortoise General Store in Los Angeles. He has been a key figure in introducing Japanese design, craftsmanship and art to the USA. He is also director of Hasami Porcelain, a porcelain brand from Nagasaki Prefecture recognised worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions about Elemense

What is Elemense?

Elemense is a global brand of home fragrance products designed to promote tranquility and peace through its scents. With over 440 years of expertise in perfumery, built on Nippon Kodo's rich history, Elemense offers a modern approach to enjoying fragrances that suit today's lifestyles.

What is the philosophy behind Elemense?

The name Elemense is a combination of “element” and “sense.” It reflects the intention for the fragrances to embody the refined sensibility of Nippon Kodo’s perfumers and the concept of the five elements in nature. Elemense is rooted in the ancient philosophy of the “Five Elements Theory,” which holds that everything in the universe consists of five key elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. These elements interact and influence the world around us, each representing an essential life force:

  • Suou (Wood): Cultivates love for others through appreciation of nature.
  • Kiyobi (Fire): Purifies the spirit and body by dispelling negativity.
  • Nukubai (Earth): Heals loneliness and brings inner peace.
  • Sekishin (Metal): Strengthens intentions, making them as enduring as stone.
  • Tetsukon (Water): Inspires determination and clarity, like iron and pure spring water.

Which are the main differences between Incense or Diffuser Oil in the Elemense collection?

Although both lines use the same base fragrances (with slight differences in key notes), they were developed with different blends tailored to each format: incense and diffuser oil. This allows the duration, intensity, and diffusion method to be adapted depending on use.

  • Incense: Fragrance sticks are lit and provide an immediate and concentrated aroma, ideal for filling a room. Perfect for larger spaces (up to 20 m²), creating a transformative atmosphere.
  • Diffuser Oil: Applied to ceramic stones, the oils are gradually absorbed and release a subtle fragrance over time, ideal for gentle and continuous diffusion. Creates a localized “island of perfume,” perfect for smaller areas such as a bedside table or desk.

What are the key notes of each fragrance?

Suou (Wood):

  • Incense: Muguet, oakmoss, amber, sandalwood
  • Diffuser Oil: Hakka, kuromoji, muguet, oakmoss

Kiyobi (Fire):

  • Incense: Hinoki, cedarwood, sandalwood, agarwood
  • Diffuser Oil: Peppermint, armoise, hiba, hinoki

Nukubai (Earth):

  • Incense: Vanilla, tobacco, patchouli, sandalwood
  • Diffuser Oil: Yuzu, pepper, tonka beans, sandalwood

Sekishin (Metal):

  • Incense: Pink pepper, everlasting, ciste, agarwood
  • Diffuser Oil: Shiso, pink pepper, ginger, everlasting, agarwood

Tetsukon (Water):

  • Incense: Bergamot, violet, cedarwood, agarwood
  • Diffuser Oil: Japanese pepper, ginger, hinoki, cedarwood

How long does a bottle of Elemense fragrance or incense stick last

Each bottle contains 20 ml of fragrance. If you use 4 drops per application, you can expect around 100 applications per bottle. Each box of incense contains 40 sticks with a burn time of approximately 30 minutes per stick.

If I apply the fragrance once a week, how long will a bottle last?

If used once a week, a bottle will last roughly two years (100 weeks).

Where can I apply Elemense fragrances?

Elemense fragrances are meant to be applied to aroma stones or absorbent surfaces. Ideal spaces include: Bedrooms, bathrooms, or living rooms for relaxation. Offices or workspaces to enhance focus and clarity. Meditation or yoga areas to promote calm and well-being.

Can I apply the fragrance directly to the skin?

No, Elemense fragrances are not formulated for direct skin application. They are intended for use on aroma stones or other absorbent objects.

Is it advisable to put a tray under the stone?

Yes, using a tray is recommended. While the stone absorbs most of the oil, some may run off. A tray will help protect surfaces beneath the stone.

Are there different shapes of stones?

Yes, the Shigaraki Ceramic Stone Diffuser comes in various shapes inspired by stones found on the beach. After the original "Round Shape No. 1," newer shapes like the "Slightly Angular No. 2," "Oval No. 3," "Bean Shape No. 4," and "Moon Shape No. 5" were introduced. You can enjoy experimenting with stacking and arranging the stones in creative ways.

Why are there two diffusion systems with the stones?

This dual system allows for a layered fragrance experience. When the lid of the kohgou is opened, it releases a light, refreshing aroma of hinoki (Japanese cypress). Adding a drop of aromatic oil blends the fresh scent with soft woody notes. You can control the intensity of the fragrance by opening or closing the lid.
