Oryoki Set - 3 Bowls
Oryoki Set - 3 Bowls
Code: MEORYOKI
For centuries, Buddhist monks in Japan have eaten from a set of small bowls that are a paradigm of design: they fit inside each other, retain heat well, fit easily in the hand and are just the right size for a balanced protein and calorie diet.
Oryoki means 'it is enough' and refers to a meditative way of eating found in Zen temples. It is based on a ritual that requires the student to pay attention to every movement and every detail. It appeals to mindfulness and attention to the present moment.
The number of bowls and utensils varies according to the school. Stackable bowls are called jihatsu. The largest bowl is sometimes called the Buddha bowl or zuhatsu: it symbolises the Buddha's head and wisdom.
