Everything you need to know about White Sage and Smudging Bundles

What are the benefits of burning white sage incense?

White sage smudge sticks help purify spaces, reduce stress and create a peaceful atmosphere. Perfect for meditation, relaxation or setting intentions.

What is the difference between White Sage, Blue Sage, and Dragon’s Blood Sage?

The main difference lies in their aromatic profile and their specific use in rituals:

  • White Sage: Famous for its silvery leaves and intense, earthy aroma. It is the most popular choice for clearing out negative energy and attracting good fortune to a space.
  • Blue Sage: With a darker hue and a softer, floral scent, this variety is less intense than white sage. It’s the perfect companion for relaxing energy cleanses and meditation.
  • Dragon’s Blood Sage: This is a powerful combo. It blends the purifying strength of white sage with Dragon’s Blood resin, which acts as an "extra shield" to boost protection and neutralize deep-seated negativity.

White Sage or Palo Santo? Which to choose?

You don’t have to choose! They complement each other perfectly. White Sage is used to "cleanse and empty" energy (it removes the old), whereas Palo Santo is used afterwards to "refill" the space with positive energy, calm, and to seal the cleansing. If the atmosphere feels very heavy, always start with the sage.

How should I store them?

Store your Palo Santo or sage in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture to preserve their natural fragrance.

When can I use Palo Santo or sage?

Many people enjoy them:

  • Before meditation or yoga.
  • At the beginning or end of the day.
  • Before welcoming guests.
  • During moments of reflection or relaxation.
  • Simply to enjoy their natural fragrance.

How can I enjoy smudging responsibly?

For comfortable indoor use:

  • Use in a well-ventilated room.
  • Avoid directly inhaling the smoke.
  • Never leave burning material unattended.
  • Place it on a non-flammable, heat-resistant surface.
  • Ensure it is completely extinguished after use.

Can I relight it?

Yes.

Palo Santo sticks and sage bundles are intended to be used multiple times.

Once extinguished and cooled, they can be relit whenever you wish.

Is the smoke supposed to be thick?

Natural plant materials may produce more visible
smoke than Japanese incense.

The amount of smoke depends on the size of the
bundle or wood, its moisture content, and airflow.

How do I use Palo Santo or sage?

  1. Light one end of the wood or bundle.
  2. Allow it to burn for about 20–30 seconds.
  3. Gently blow out the flame.
  4. Let the glowing ember release its fragrant smoke.
  5. Place it in a heat-resistant holder or dish between uses.

Why does my Palo Santo or sage bundle go out after a few minutes?

This is completely normal.

Unlike incense sticks, Palo Santo wood and sage
bundles are designed to smoulder rather than burn continuously. After being
lit, they often extinguish naturally after two to five minutes while continuing
to release their fragrance.

If you wish, you can simply relight them several
times during your session.

Some traditions also view this natural
extinguishing as part of the ritual, believing that the wood or herbs burn for
as long as they are needed. This is a cultural or spiritual interpretation
rather than a physical property of the product.

Are there different varieties of sage?

Yes.

Several varieties of sage are used for their
fragrance and appearance.

White Sage (Salvia apiana) is the best known,
but other varieties such as Blue Sage, each offer their own aromatic character
and traditional uses.

What is the difference between White Sage and Palo Santo?

Although both are commonly used for smudging,
they are different products.

White Sage is a dried bundle of aromatic leaves
that produces an herbal, fresh fragrance.

Palo Santo is a naturally aromatic wood from
South America with warm, woody, slightly resinous notes.

Each offers a distinct sensory experience.

What is smudging?

Smudging is the practice of burning aromatic
plants or wood to release their natural fragrance. It has been part of many
cultural and spiritual traditions around the world and is now also appreciated
for creating a calming atmosphere and adding a pleasant natural scent to the
home.
