The palo santo aromatic wood is extracted from the Bursera graveolens tree. It grows in South America, especially on the Pacific coast. The aroma is sweet and intense with citric notes.

Native Americans still use it during religious rituals as they consider its scented white smoke chases evil spirits away and protects the village. It’s highly valued for its mystical capacity to bring positive energies, to cleanse and perfume spaces and to allow a deep spiritual connection. In the regions where it comes from, people also use raw palo santo wood to make protective and decorative objects.

In order to get a high quality palo santo, the wood must be collected following a specific process. “Maturity is between 50 and 70 years old. Once the tree dies from natural causes, it has to remain at the same place for at least 5 to 8 years so that the oils are mature enough to be able to make quality incense”, according to Jonathon Miller Weisberger, ethnobotanist author of Rainforest Medicine: Preserving Indigenous Science and Biodiversity in the Upper Amazon. Our palo santo comes from fallen trees. Controled by SERFOR (Forest and Wild Fauna National Service), it fulfils the Peruvian regulations in force. The Bursera graveolens wood is not on the CITES list.

THE POWER IS IN YOUR PURPOSE

HOW TO DO A SMUDGING RITUAL

Doing a smudging ritual is much more than lighting aromatic herbs: it’s a mindful act that connects you with the sacred. Before you begin, focus your attention on the intention of cleansing or blessing. Then, follow these steps to guide the smoke and the energy where you need it most.

  • Place a little marmolina in an abalone shell or in a heat-resistant bowl. If you use the shell, you can skip the tripod during the ritual if that feels more comfortable.

  • Light the bundle or the Palo Santo stick. Blow gently to encourage the flame, then let it go out. Watch out for sparks! Place the stick on the marmolina.

  • Walk through the space, or trace the outline of the ritual participants with the shell, spreading the smoke with a feather, a fan, or your hand. Let your intuition guide the smoke toward the surroundings and toward each person’s head, back, arms, and legs.

AN ANCESTRAL JOURNEY

THE WISDOM OF PLANTS

The smudging rite is a universal practice. Since ancient times, plants have been used across cultures to heal and protect. Native Americans used this rite to purify their physical and emotional bodies, as well as places and objects. From California to the forests of Peru, we seek natural raw materials to offer tradition and quality. This universal practice is said to promote mental clarity, joy, and calm.

Todo lo que necesitas saber sobre Palo Santo

What is smudging?

Smudging is the practice of burning aromatic
plants or wood to release their natural fragrance. It has been part of many
cultural and spiritual traditions around the world and is now also appreciated
for creating a calming atmosphere and adding a pleasant natural scent to the
home.

What is the difference between White Sage and Palo Santo?

Although both are commonly used for smudging,
they are different products.

White Sage is a dried bundle of aromatic leaves
that produces an herbal, fresh fragrance.

Palo Santo is a naturally aromatic wood from
South America with warm, woody, slightly resinous notes.

Each offers a distinct sensory experience.

Are there different varieties of sage?

Yes.

Several varieties of sage are used for their
fragrance and appearance.

White Sage (Salvia apiana) is the best known,
but other varieties such as Blue Sage, each offer their own aromatic character
and traditional uses.

Why does my Palo Santo or sage bundle go out after a few minutes?

This is completely normal.

Unlike incense sticks, Palo Santo wood and sage
bundles are designed to smoulder rather than burn continuously. After being
lit, they often extinguish naturally after two to five minutes while continuing
to release their fragrance.

If you wish, you can simply relight them several
times during your session.

Some traditions also view this natural
extinguishing as part of the ritual, believing that the wood or herbs burn for
as long as they are needed. This is a cultural or spiritual interpretation
rather than a physical property of the product.

How do I use Palo Santo or sage?

  1. Light one end of the wood or bundle.
  2. Allow it to burn for about 20–30 seconds.
  3. Gently blow out the flame.
  4. Let the glowing ember release its fragrant smoke.
  5. Place it in a heat-resistant holder or dish between uses.

Is the smoke supposed to be thick?

Natural plant materials may produce more visible
smoke than Japanese incense.

The amount of smoke depends on the size of the
bundle or wood, its moisture content, and airflow.

Can I relight it?

Yes.

Palo Santo sticks and sage bundles are intended to be used multiple times.

Once extinguished and cooled, they can be relit whenever you wish.

How can I enjoy smudging responsibly?

For comfortable indoor use:

  • Use in a well-ventilated room.
  • Avoid directly inhaling the smoke.
  • Never leave burning material unattended.
  • Place it on a non-flammable, heat-resistant surface.
  • Ensure it is completely extinguished after use.

When can I use Palo Santo or sage?

Many people enjoy them:

  • Before meditation or yoga.
  • At the beginning or end of the day.
  • Before welcoming guests.
  • During moments of reflection or relaxation.
  • Simply to enjoy their natural fragrance.

How should I store them?

Store your Palo Santo or sage in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture to preserve their natural fragrance.
