In Japanese, makko means incense powder. In this case, we are talking about a specific one called tabu: it is the finely ground bark of the Machilus Thunbergii tree that grows in many Asian countries like Japan, Taiwan, Thailand or the south of China. Due to its many properties, it has been used as a base to make Japanese incense for centuries:
- When mixed with water, the tabu powder acquires a plasticine like consistency. Sticks, cones or spirals are then easily shaped.
- As it is almost odourless, other scents can be added to the tabu mixture without altering them: ground ingredients like clove, cinnamon, sandalwood or agarwood as well as perfumery essential oils.
- It burns in a smooth and uniform way.

How does the manufacturer ensure a continuous supply and responsible collection?

The manufacturer has maintained business relationships with its suppliers for over 30 years.

Harvesting is carried out on a rotating basis in different forest areas, allowing two to three years to pass before returning to harvest in the same area.

This method aims to promote the natural regeneration of branches and leaves, respecting the growth cycles of the trees and promoting the sustainable use of plant resources.

Where do the raw materials come from?

The raw materials are sourced from the mountainous regions of Kyushu in Japan, as well
as China and Taiwan.

How is Makko powder produced?

After harvesting, the plant materials are dried, ground, and sieved to obtain a fine powder. Different varieties may be blended to maintain consistent quality.

Is a Material Safety Data Sheet (SDS) available for Makko powder?

Makko
powder is not classified under the REACH Regulation, and no Safety Data Sheet
(SDS) is available.

How much water should be added to make incense?

As a
general guideline, approximately 90 ml of water is recommended per 100 g of Makko powder. The amount required may vary depending on the batch, the aromatic ingredients added, and the equipment used. It is recommended to add the water gradually until a smooth, workable paste is obtained.

What is Makko powder made from?

Makko powder is made exclusively from different parts of Machilus thunbergii, without being mixed with other wood species.
