The lyrics were written by John Newton, an Englishman who wrote them at the end of the XVIIIth century. As a young man on board of a merchant ship, he experienced a spiritual awakening, caught in a deadly storm at sea. Being a slave trader, he then became a convinced abolitionist. 200 years later, Newton's message of optimism still resonates with intensity thanks to the Amazing Grace Chime.
