Jizo is a representation of Jizo Bosatsu, Japan's most popular Buddha, who is characterized by a kind and compassionate expression. He is not only the guardian of travelers but also the protector of motherhood and children who died prematurely. Traditionally the Japanese make him abundant offerings of food. They dress him in woolen hats and scarves so he doesn't get cold and also with red bibs so he doesn't get dirty.
